How to Lose Body Fat with the Glycemic Index

If you’ve been trying to lose body fat quickly, you’ll be happy to know there is a tool called the Glycemic Index which might be able to help. The glycemic index is actually a chart or a guideline which helps to know which foods can cause the most problems with body fat. Following an eating plan which uses the glycemic index can help you lose belly fat first, but it’s also an excellent eating plan which will help you lose body fat in general.

Just following a standard diet or exercise plan will not allow you to choose which area of your body fat will start burning off of first. So anything which helps you to burn body fat in general will help you burn any extra body fat you may have all over your body. Many people often carry the majority of their body fat on their stomach and belly area though, and this is why using the glycemic index can help you start losing it there first.

The glycemic index is just a chart which is used as a guideline to help you select the types of foods to eat. The chart is based on how fast specific foods are turned into sugar in your body. There’s quite a bit of medical science and technical information behind how the glycemic index works to help you burn fat, so we’ll simply summarize some of that information here.

When foods are turned into sugar inside your body very quickly, it causes a very rapid rise in your blood sugar levels. These quick spikes can cause problems within your body which cause you to gain extra fat.

Your body needs those extra, fast spikes of sugar levels when it is doing very active or strenuous physical activity. That extra sugar in your blood stream is put to immediate use, which provides you the instant energy you need for the activities you’re doing. If you are just sitting at your desk however, or watching TV, or doing other things which aren’t overly physical then your body will turn that sugar into fat and store it for later use.

Different foods are turned into sugar inside your body at different rates. And this is what make the glycemic index so handy. If you eat foods which have a high glycemic index rating then that food is going to be turned to sugar and fat very quickly. If however, you select foods which show a lower glycemic load, then it takes your body much longer to process those foods. And the longer it takes for your body to process a specific food, the more likely that at least some of that food will be used for general energy and maintenance requirements for body has. So foods which have a lower glycemic load will not be turned into as much fat to be stored for your later energy needs.
